Beth Van Hoesen began drawing as a young child, developing the keen eye and deft hand so evident in the four exquisite floral studies in this notecard selection. After graduating from Stanford University, Van Hoesen (American, b. 1926) studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with abstract expressionist Clyfford Still and figurative painter David Park. Park became a major influence on Van Hoesen, inspiring her to eschew abstraction for expressive realism. At the Escuela Esmeralda in Mexico, she says, she learned “still more ways of seeing—no solamente con sus ojos, pero con su corazón (not only with your eyes, but with your heart ).” An acknowledged master of drawing and printmaking, Van Hoesen has exhibited worldwide and is represented in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institution; the Portland Art Museum, Oregon; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and many other major museums.
