To make her detailed paintings of flowers, Jill Mackie (American, b. 1941) applies oil paint to panel much as Leonardo da Vinci or Artemisia Gentileschi did centuries before her. The process is cumulative, with layers of opaque and transparent colors endowing the subject with sculptural volume. A technique perfected long before the advent of photography has permitted Mackie to produce images of photographic clarity, and because she returns again and again to flowers and faces, she invites us to meditate on a familiar paradox: life moves along, art remains.
The flowers illustrating these notecards—rose, poppy, magnolia, and iris—are familiar to most of us. Blooming in spring and summer in many regions, their alluring scents and colors delight us for a few precious weeks and then they are gone. These gorgeous blossoms remain yours—until you decide to send them away.
Twenty assorted 5 x 7" blank note cards (5 each of 4 styles) with envelopes and decorative box. ISBN: 978-0-7649-4593-9.
