Watercolors by James Tissot

As a student, James Tissot (French, 1836–1902) trained with Hendrik Leys, Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin, and Louis Lamothe, painters who specialized in historical, biblical, and literary subjects. Cultivating their exquisite finish, though not their subject matter, Tissot painted the glittering high society of Paris and London for much of his career and earned commissions from patrons, who made him rich. While living in London, his friendship with James McNeill Whistler no doubt contributed to a psychologically penetrating approach to his subjects.

After experiencing a religious vision in 1885, Tissot abruptly shifted his artistic focus. The painter set out to produce a consummately accurate visual rendering of the story told in the Gospels. After visits to the Holy Land, he began a ten-year endeavor to illustrate the life of Christ, producing 350 watercolors. In the late 1890s, traveling exhibitions of these works drew critical praise and large audiences across France, England, and North America. The citizens of Brooklyn purchased the entire set for the Brooklyn Museum by public subscription in 1900.
