Christopher Marley (American, b. 1969) makes geometric arrangements of exotic insects that were harvested on collecting expeditions and bought from conscientious suppliers. (If a trade in insects convinces entrepreneurs in developing countries to set precious land aside, this may help stabilize animal populations.) From a dazzling mandala of scarabs to a penetrating portrait of a flower beetle, these images reproduce the same dazzling hues that their subject creatures display in the wild—Marley uses no computer tricks or manipulations. The twelve breathtaking photographs featured in this calendar are accompanied by concise profiles of the insects presented.

Diminutive does not necessarily mean subtle or understated. In fact, the minuscule often works in favor of the artist. The more designs can be appreciated initially as color palette or visual texture, the more universal their appeal. The tiny leaf beetles known as Chrysomelidae that comprise this piece (those pictured come from Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, and Thailand) are commonly considered pests, but as elements of design, their widely varied colors make them easy to work with.
