One glance at any of the twelve Waterhouse paintings in this calendar and you are caught in a web of romance and intrigue. The lures are many: fine colors, excellent draftsmanship, and dramatic emotion, drawing you into a tale perfumed with myrrh and attar of roses. John William Waterhouse (English, b. Italy, 1849–1917) worked within familiar academic conventions of the day, but by infusing his legendary, literary, and historical subjects with sensuality and a hint of mystery, he created an utterly individual oeuvre.
