Of the hundreds of narrow “slot” canyons in the Southwest, Antelope Canyon is undoubtedly the most visited and photographed. On the Navajo Reservation near Page, Arizona, the canyon was formed over centuries as floodwaters relentlessly scoured out fissures in the soft sandstone. Sunlight filtering down from high above bathes the canyon’s multicolored walls and sandy floor in warm glowing light, revealing a luscious palette of yellows, oranges, and reds—and, depending on the time of day, perhaps purples and blues as well.

Photography in the canyon can prove challenging, however, as contrast ranges are extreme, and the light and its magical effects are constantly changing. Leave it to master photographer Art Wolfe to capture the canyon’s almost supernatural qualities at their most beautiful. Wolfe’s photographs are recognized throughout the world for their mastery of color, composition, and perspective. His unique approach to nature photography is based on his training in the arts and his love of the environment.
