Artist

Alma Thomas

Exuberant colorist Alma Thomas (American, 1891–1978) created glowing, mosaic-like artworks during her artistic prime. For nearly 40 years she taught art in Washington, DC, public schools, all the while exploring Expressionist, Abstract, and nonobjective phases of art. Her mature style features bold, splashy paintings inspired by nature and the happenings of her day. She was particularly excited by space exploration of the 1960s, which led to the noteworthy Space series in which her lifelong study of color theory sparkles. She was an artist of indomitable spirit. As a Black woman, she overcame hurdles related to race, gender, and age; she produced her most important works after age 70. Thomas is known as a major painter of the Washington Color Field School.

Poorly made

The art is beautiful, of course, but I was very disappointed with the quality of the puzzle. I have completed many Pomegranate puzzles over the past 2 years. I am used to Pomegranate puzzles having well-cut pieces that snap right in. The pieces for this puzzle were difficult to press in, often looked as if they might mot actually fit in the spot, and did not stay in place when the puzzle was moved. Perhaps Pomegranate has changed manufacturers, or decrease quality for quantity. In any case, I am not sure if I will buy another Pomegranate puzzle.

Thanks for your feedback! If your puzzle is still assembled, we would like to take a look and see if we can get to the bottom of what is going on. Please send an e-mail to hello@pomegranate.com, with a photo of the assembled puzzle, and the back of the puzzle box, and we will give this our prompt attention.
